Drunk Elephant is a well-known skincare brand in the beauty community. Some of their products are very much talked about, and one of them is this Drunk Elephant Cleanser: Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser.

Everyone has something enthusiastic to say about it, but would it live up to the hype? Would I, too, become a hyped member of the Drunk Elephant fan club? Keep reading for the answer.

7.9Expert Score
Drunk Elephant Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser
Overall, the Drunk Elephant Cleanser is good but very basic. It gets the job done but doesn’t deliver outstanding results. It doesn’t remove full glam makeup but works well as a second cleanse in a double cleansing routine. I wouldn’t recommend the Drunk Elephant Cleanser to people with dry skin as it felt somewhat stripping on my skin. However, I do think this works well as a basic cleanser, but it is overpriced, in my opinion.

  • It made my skin feel a little bit tight
  • Quite expensive for what you get

What drew me is that Drunk Elephant is a non-toxic beauty brand, meaning that they are committed to using only ingredients that directly benefit the skin’s health or support.

They focus on healthy pH levels, formulations the skin recognizes, a small molecular structure easily absorbed, and effective active ingredients that support and maintain the skin’s acid mantle.

But what they leave out of their products is the Suspicious 6™ (essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, fragrances/dyes, SLS).

Beste No. 9 Jelly Drunk Elephant Cleanser Product Information

Drunk Elephant is a luxury skincare brand that uses only natural ingredients. Their products are fragrance-free, and they are safe for sensitive skin. Here’s what the company says: “Drunk Elephant is committed to using only ingredients that either directly benefit the skin’s health or support the integrity and effectiveness of our formulations. At Drunk Elephant, we believe six culprits are at the root of almost all skin problems. If you take a break from the Suspicious 6, your skin can reset to its happiest, healthiest state.”

The Beste No. 9 Drunk Elephant Cleanser is a natural skincare product that helps to remove dead cells and impurities from the skin. The cleanser has a unique formula that contains organic ingredients such as aloe vera, cucumber extract, and honey. Moreover, the cleaner is 100% free of SLS, essential oils, silicones, and fragrance, and it’s vegan and cruelty-free. Drunk Elephant is, in fact, a supporter of IEF (International Elephant Foundation).

What It Does

The Drunk Elephant Cleanser is a gentle cleanser that removes makeup, excess oil, pollution, and grime that rinses away without residue, leaving skin clean and soft. With a unique blend of mild surfactants and makeup-dissolving emollients, this gentle formula rinses away without any residue, leaving skin clean and soft.

How To Use

Squeeze the Drunk Elephant Jelly Cleanser into the palm of your hand and gently massage it over wet or dry skin. Add water to lather, then rinse well and pat dry. You can use this cleanser every night.

Key Ingredients

  • Mild Surfactant Blend: Mild cleansing agents, including coconut-based surfactants rich in fatty acids, work together to create a gentle lather that effectively dissolves even stubborn makeup, sunscreen, and oils while supporting a healthy skin barrier.
  • Glycerin: A skin-identical humectant, glycerin helps replenish hydration levels that are normally lost in the skin during the cleansing process.
  • Cucumis Melo Cantalupensis (Cantaloupe) Fruit Extract: Rich in antioxidants, this extract helps soothe and hydrate.
  • Virgin Marula Oil: High in critical antioxidants and omegas 6 and 9, this nourishing oil boosts the cleansing and makeup-removal power of Beste™ No.9.

Where To Buy

The Drunk Elephant Cleanser is available in two sizes: 150 ml/5 fl. oz. and 60 ml/2 fl. oz. and retails for $32 and $16 (depending on the size). Drunk Elephant is available on their own website, Sephora, Ulta, SpaceNK, and Cult Beauty.

Beste No. 9 Jelly Drunk Elephant Cleanser Review

Innovative Beste No. 9 Jelly Drunk Elephant Cleanser Review

I’m a big advocate for finding products that do their jobs but are gentle on the skin, and this Drunk Elephant Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser does just that. My skin type is pretty low maintenance, so I don’t need very rough products on my skin, and this worked fine. However, I tried removing a full face of makeup, and it didn’t get rid of every bit, unfortunately. I recommend this cleanser as the second cleanser in your double cleansing routine or as a morning cleanser.

After using this cleanser, my skin feels soft and clean. It doesn’t irritate my skin and doesn’t react to other skincare products I used afterward. After washing your face, it doesn’t feel overly stripped or stiff like some cleansers leave you. I would say that it felt a tiny bit stripping or tight, though. I think that this cleanser wouldn’t be the best match for people with very dry skin.

As I said, my skin is pretty low maintenance, and I don’t have a lot of acne, textures, or pores. I can’t really tell you if I saw a difference in my skin because I didn’t, but it may would’ve done a visibly better job if I had more impurities. To me, it’s a good but basic cleanser, but this fact, in combination with its price point, I wouldn’t repurchase it quickly. There are quite a few other options out there that do a similar or even better job for less money.

Alternatives

  • Fresh Soy Face Cleanser: The Fresh Soy Cleanser has definitely wow-ed me more than this cleanser did. The Fresh Soy Cleanser isn’t drying and really removes all the makeup. I think it’s a great alternative. However, it is a bit more expensive than the Drunk Elephant Cleanser.
  • PURITO From Green Cleansing Oil: A great, affordable option that’s also very gentle to the skin, leaves the skin feeling all clean and not stripped at all. I do struggle a bit to get all my eye makeup removed, though.
  • The Inkey List Oat Cleansing Balm: This is one of the most affordable and effective cleansing balms I’ve ever tried. It removes all the makeup with ease, even full glam, and doesn’t irritate or strip the skin at all. It does have a different texture, a bit thicker as it is a balm, compared to this Drunk Elephant Cleanser. Overall, a great alternative!

Final Verdict

Overall, the Drunk Elephant Cleanser is a good but very basic cleanser. However, I do think this works well as a basic cleanser, but it is definitely overpriced, in my opinion.

Yes, they’re indeed cruelty-free. Mind you, they do sell in China, which is usually a sign that a brand isn’t cruelty-free as a brand needs to test on animals since it’s required by law.

Drunk Elephant says about their availability in China: “Animal testing is something we would never do. Hong Kong SAR does not require animal testing. That is the only place where we will be selling in retail (via Sephora HK), and in mainland China, we are using cross-border e-commerce, which does not require the same registration process as cosmetics sold via retail there. We are Leaping Bunny Program certified and never have, nor will we ever, animal test or allow our products to be tested on animals”.
