Even though Spring is officially still a month away, around this time of the year my hands start itching and I really want to do a spring cleaning session! During my spring clean, I sort through my products and declutter old products, donate/sell unused/barely used products, clean my products and (re)organize them. This time, you’ll get the opportunity to join my spring cleaning adventure and read everything about it in today’s blog post!
Overall, I really like to clean and organize. Especially when it comes to my makeup because that collection is my baby and I love to take good care of it. That’s the reason why I sort through my products on a regular base and declutter items I don’t use anymore.
Besides decluttering my makeup collection, I also think it’s important to clean them every now and then. It’s not the packaging of the products that are super dirty but I like to just clean it once in a while, to remove accidentally little smudges or a bit of dust. I also clean my drawers to make sure everything is fresh and clean again.
After decluttering and cleaning, I also love to (re)organize my drawers. I’m obsessed with acrylic holders so I’ll show you how I’m using them and what a difference it makes.
This is the short explanation of my Spring Cleaning, keep on reading if you like to see more details. 🙂
I went through my makeup collection not that long ago so I didn’t have many products to declutter this time. However, I decided to give away 2 lipsticks (Kylie Cosmetics in Woods and Miami) which I barely use and my mom loves these types of colors. Besides these 2 items, I also decided to sell 2 small eyeshadow palettes (Too Faced palette and Colourpop x Disney Villains palette) because I never use them.
Since I’m focusing on emptying products in my Project Pan, I can tell I’ll have some empties in a couple of weeks (also skincare items which I didn’t include in my Project Pan). I’m planning on writing a blog post about that after I’ve emptied multiple products.
That’s it for now. I’m planning on going through my collection again when I’m doing my Summer Cleaning so hopefully I’ll have more items to declutter.
The actual cleaning isn’t my favorite part, however, I do feel so satisfied once I did this. I also think it’s very important to make sure everything is clean again because it looks better when it’s clean + I hope to remove some bacteria as well.
I always do drawer after drawer, not everything all at once because I can feel overwhelmed when it’s a huge mess. So I start taking out the products of the first drawer, then clean the drawer and the acrylic holders. The next step is cleaning the products itself and put it back where it belongs.
I do the same steps with every drawer and then everything is clean again! But wait… we forget one important part! Cleaning my makeup brushes. Oh, how I hate this task! I have to admit I should wash my brushes more often but I just hate it so I keep postponing it. However, it truly was time for a good spring cleaning session.
For the first time, I used the SigMagic brush cleanser by Sigma Beauty and I was shocked! This product made it so easy to wash my brushes and I’ve never seen them look so good. This isn’t sponsored, I bought this with my own money. Even my older brushes, which I thought were just stained over the years, came out white again! I would definitely recommend this brush cleanser if you hate washing your brushes like me.
To me, this is the most fun part! I ordered 2 new acrylic holders because I felt like my small eyeshadow palette became a mess. Moreover, I grew my single potted eyeshadows overnight so I wanted to buy better storage for them as well. The before and after of these drawers is so nice! I’ll show you in a second.
Besides the new acrylic holders, I decided to switch things a little bit. I’ve made a whole drawer for my highlighter palettes, face palettes, and fake lashes. I also store my extra sponges there too. Since I removed the face palettes from my blush drawer, my blush drawer looks way better now too.
Acrylic storage is slightly more expensive than plastic storage but acrylic will last you longer. Acrylic is so stable, easy to clean and very beautiful. A little side note:
Acrylic although being a glass-like material is one of the types of plastics. The production and consumption of plastic have led to various kinds of pollution on our planet. Modern scientists have recommended a minimum usage of plastics because of the threat posed by their consumption. However, acrylic is easy to reuse and recycle. Moreover, acrylic is shatterproof, high impact strength, durability, and applicability. Acrylic can last a life-time and doesn’t need to be replaced very often. There are probably more eco-friendly products out there, but acrylic isn’t as harmful as other types of plastic.
This time, I bought my acrylic organizers are from Amazon.de because shipping is less expensive from Germany than the US. The store I got them from is called TidyUps.
Everything is decluttered, clean and organized again and I’m so happy! If I inspired you to start spring cleaning your makeup collection too, here are some tips.
Tips for Spring Cleaning
- Always start with decluttering first! You don’t want to clean and organize products which you’ll be throwing out anyway (if you donate products or sell them, cleaning is necessary though).
- If you have a big makeup collection like me, try to be critical when decluttering. Are you still using everything in your drawers?
- Get acrylic organizers. Or at least any organizers. Since I’m using organizers, my drawers don’t look like a mess anymore and it’s way easier to see which products you have.
- Measure your drawers before you buy organizers. I have the Ikea Alex drawer and a lot of organizers are made to fit these drawers. However, I still measured my drawers to figure out how many organizers I needed. Some organizers will come in the exact same size as an Alex drawer which makes it easy. But if you don’t have an Alex drawer or you want to go for smaller organizers, measuring is your friend!
- Count the number of products. This is good for stopping your makeup hoarding lol as well as if you are going to buy organizers which hold a certain amount of products. You don’t want to buy too much or too few organizers.
- Don’t go in with a too harsh cleaning product. Sometimes a wet cloth is enough.
