I have been wanting to test the Fenty Beauty Foundation for a while now but I couldn’t order online because I had a hard time picking the right shade for my skin tone. The moment I stepped into a Sephora when I was in NYC, I asked an employee to help me shade match and bought it. I have been testing the foundation ever since and today I’m going to share my thoughts with you!

Fenty Beauty was created with a vision. For creator and founder Rihanna, it was essential “that women everywhere would be included”. After recognizing a void in the industry, Rihanna focused on a range of traditionally hard-to-match skin tones, developing formulas that work for all skin types, and pinpointing universal shades. Her aim, above all, is to inspire: “Makeup is there for you to have fun with. It should never feel like pressure. It should never feel like a uniform. Feel free to take chances, and take risks, and dare to do something new or different.” – Fenty Beauty.

I really like the vision Rihanna has and I also think it’s important to include all types of women with all types of different skin tones. For example, most brands don’t include enough foundations to match people of color which is really sad. I like that Rihanna made sure she had a wide range of foundation colors to match as many different skin tones as possible.

The Fenty Beauty Foundation comes in gorgeous matte, glass packaging and is available in 50 shades for the most inclusive foundation range yet. The foundation has a soft matte finish, medium to full coverage, contains 1.08 oz/ 32 mL, and retails for $48. Fenty Beauty is cruelty-free and the foundation itself is also vegan. This is how Fenty Beauty describes the foundation:

“Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation gives skin an instantly smooth, pore-diffused, shine-free finish that easily builds to medium to full coverage. This oil-free soft matte foundation is made with climate-adaptive technology that’s resistant to sweat and humidity, and won’t clog pores so that wherever you are, it’s going to work on your skin. Best of all, this light-as-air, long-wear  Pro Filt’r foundation is undetectable on skin — so you always look like you.

The Sephora employee shade matched me with shade 190 and in-store, it looked like a very good match to me too. However, I did have a tan at the time of the shade match which I didn’t really think of and so I realized later on that this foundation would only match me if I have a tan or when I’m self tanned. Not a huge problem though, but to make sure I could’ve worn it year-round or most of the time, I should have gone a shade lighter.

On top of that, the foundation really oxidized on me after it got absorbed and settled in the skin. After a while, it turned ever darker and somewhat too warm too. This means that even with a tan, this shade ended up being too dark for me sadly. I wore the foundation a lot and tried to work with the shade and oxidizing but I just don’t like the shade at all.

This is what one pump looks like when it just gets out of the bottle. It isn’t oxidized here yet, it happens when it’s really blended and settled. Even though you obviously have to shade match with your face and neck, I can already tell by this little pump on my hand that it’s quite dark for me. But yeah we know now that the shade match was off.

The formula isn’t bad but definitely not a favorite either. The Fenty Beauty Foundation feels pretty lightweight and the finish is indeed matte, therefore it also looked cakey and dry on me. I have a normal to dry skin type so if you have dry skin, I’m sure you aren’t going to like this foundation. I personally think it’s better suited for people with a combination or oily skin type.

The Fenty Beauty foundation lasted all day, it is definitely a medium coverage foundation and even though I think it is buildable, it does make me look even more dry and cakey. If you have dry skin and really want to try this foundation, I recommend moisturizing and using a hydrating primer. this will help with the cakiness. However, I think there are better foundation options out there for people with dry skin. For example, the Urban Decay Stay Naked Foundation or the Dose of Colors Meet Your Hue Foundation.

 Final Verdict

I don’t like that the Fenty Beauty foundation oxidized and that it looked cakey, but it is lightweight and has good coverage. I think this foundation could definitely work for oily skin types, just not for people with drier skin, like myself. I don’t think I’m going to repurchase this Fenty Beauty foundation but I’m sure Fenty has more launches coming up so let’s hope for a better suiting foundation for dry skin.

I’m not super excited as I thought I would be, I was exactly quite disappointed in this Fenty Beauty foundation. However, I have high hopes for future launches because I do love the Gloss Bomb lipglosses and the highlighter. Have you tried this foundation?
