Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane Eyeshadow Palette
Even though the color scheme is amazing, the Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane Palette did not perform as I expected it to. The formula isn’t beginner-friendly and quite difficult to work with. I also noticed some fallout and kickback in the pan. Based on the price, it might be better to look for another palette. If you love the color scheme just like me, I recommend getting this palette during a sale since it’s not worth its full price.

Recently the Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane Collection launched, and the eyeshadow palette in that collection immediately caught my eye. I have lots of warm-toned palettes in my collection, but I barely have more neutral to cool-toned palettes with greyish and smokey eye colors. It wasn’t a hard decision to add this palette to my cart and checkout.

I love Melt Cosmetics since it’s a grungy makeup brand that stays true to its vibes and vision. It’s one of the few makeup brands with vibrant colors in their palettes, as well as still providing neutral colors for basic people like myself lol. The Twenty Seven Eyeshadow Palette still has my heart, and I’ve added a couple more palettes and the Melt Cream Blushes to my collection, too.

The Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane Eyeshadow Palette made me fall in love with the color story the moment I saw it. Since I experienced high quality from Melt eyeshadow palettes, I set the bar high for this palette. Is it good? Is it a flop? Let’s find out together!

Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane Eyeshadow Palette

Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane

The Melt Cosmetics website explains the palette: “The NEW Melt Mary Jane Palette. Inspired by the dense tones found in cannabis smoke and the luster of crystal-coated buds. She is elevating your classic smoky eye with gunmetal and hazy crystalline hues.” The shade description:

  • Mary Jane – Wash this sheer bud crystal shade all over the lid or pop it in the inner corner for a high-impact shine.
  • Gaspar – This jasper matte eyeshadow is easy to wear in the crease or as a wash of color and adds a subtle hit of olive.
  • Sweet Lucy – A deliciously seductive metallic shadow with a deep charcoal base and pyrite-hued pearl. Apply this shade all over the lid for a smoldering smokey eye.
  • Bamba– Dense graphite metallic eyeshadow with a true neutral tone. Wet your brush for a chrome effect.
  • Sinsemilla – Smooth deep brown matte with a cool undertone. Smudge this eye shadow into the lash line and outer corner to deepen and define your smoked eye.
  • Santa Maria – Black diamond shadow. Opaque and dynamic, she can be applied with a finger or a brush for a dense gunmetal eye look.
  • Rubia – She’s our neutral crease shade of this palette. Blend this ash blonde matte shadow in the crease for a seamless gradient.
  • Bo – Wash this effortlessly elegant smoky quartz eyeshadow all over the lid for a simple, yet refined eye look.
  • Mari – Hold it together. This natural hemp paper-hued eyeshadow is here to blend away any harsh lines.
  • Kali – Add this sheer crushed diamond-toned shadow to the center of the lid for an energetic luster.

The Mary Jane palette retails for $58, contains 19.35g / 0.68oz, and is 100% vegan. The palette contains 6 metallic shades and 4 matte shades.

Melt Mary Jane Palette Swatches

I always swatch a product first before I test the product on the lids (or wherever that product normally goes lol, but in this case, it’s the eyes). The swatches don’t look that bad on my arm, but I had to dig my finger into some of the shades to get some pigment, which surprised and disappointed me. I was rubbing as if my life depended on it, and that’s not how I like to pick up pigment on my finger or, obviously, a brush. I’m talking about the shades Mary Jane, Rubia, Mari, and Kali.

The shades with a great amount of pigment left a lot of kickback in the pan and fallout on the face. You must tap off your brush or apply the shadows wet before you go near your eyes. I’ve never experienced this before, so I was shocked because I normally like the Melt Cosmetics eyeshadow formula.

Even though my first impression of the formula wasn’t that good, I absolutely love the color story of this Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane palette. Besides that, the palette does look better on the eyes than swatched, which is the most important. However, the shades aren’t that easy to blend, and some of them look slightly patchy on the lids.

This is a look I created with the Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane palette, and not going to lie; I like how it turned out. I noticed some patchiness, but I was able to blend the worst part away, but it took me some work to do so.

After all, I’m not sure what to think of this palette. It’s not the best palette I’ve ever tried, but I can make it work, and I love the color scheme. The fallout and kickback are slightly bothering me, just like the lack of pigment of some shades and the patchiness I’ve noticed. On the other side, the pigment is buildable; the patchiness is fading while blending, and the colors look good on the lids. It’s bad, but ok at the same time?

I wouldn’t use this palette for average days; I just want to put on a quick makeup look for sure because it definitely took me a while to get it to look good. I would use it if I have a lot of time and when I’m going for a more dramatic or party look.

This palette isn’t a beginner-friendly palette or for people that want to do their makeup quickly at all times. It’s not going to work for you! It could work for you if you have the time and are a bit more experienced in doing makeup.

Alternatives

  • Natasha Denona Glam Palette: even though the Glam Palette has quite lighter shades compared to the Melt Mary Jane smokey vibes, it still is an excellent alternative as the quality is amazing, it’s a little bit more expensive, but you’ll get 5 more shades and no fallout or kickback.

Final Verdict

Even though the color scheme is amazing, the Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane Palette did not perform as I expected it to. The formula isn’t beginner-friendly and quite difficult to work with. I also noticed some fallout and kickback in the pan. Based on the price, it might be better to look for another palette. If you love the color scheme just like me, I recommend getting this palette during a sale since it’s not worth its full price.
