Awesome
As the first two Jaclyn Hill palettes were a huge hit, I expected more from this one. Sadly the pigmentation is lacking, some shades apply patchily, are hard to blend, and the metallics aren’t metallics.

Pros

Cons
  • Lack of pigment
  • Some shades are patchy
  • Tough to blend
  • Metallics aren’t performing

I’m the biggest sucker for neutral palettes, so when this Morphe x Jaclyn Hill palette got revealed by Jaclyn, I fell in love immediately. The color scheme is so pretty! I also loved how Morphe and Jaclyn did a matte top row and a metallic bottom row, as it made me think about the Tati Beauty Textured Neutrals Palette.

Even though I haven’t bought from Morphe for a while now, mainly because of the (influencer’s) scandals that seemed to revolve around Morphe and because of the shifting eyeshadow quality.

I couldn’t pass on this palette, so I just took the leap and bought it; it wasn’t expensive and looked like my dream palette. I just had to get it and see how the quality was myself. I’m telling you upfront I was very disappointed. This post shares all the details, experiences, and thoughts.

Things To Note

Morphe claims to be 100% cruelty-free with this statement: “Morphe does not condone animal testing in any way. We do not test any of our products on animals. We also do not test any of our ingredients on animals nor allow our manufacturers to do so on our behalf. Instead, we choose to test drive our products on people (with their permission, of course).”

Unfortunately, the term “cruelty-free” is not regulated, meaning that any company can make that claim with no legal repercussions, even if it is not truly cruelty-free. In this short policy, you’ll notice that Morphe does not address its suppliers or third parties. (Source: Cruelty-Free Kitty) This means Morphe is in a grey area regarding whether they are cruelty-free or not.

On top of that, in 2017, Morphe reformulated their popular Volume II eyeshadow palette, a collaboration with Jaclyn Hill. The new palette was so longer vegan; however, Morphe didn’t share this information with their customer. Even after this controversy, customers have made quite a few statements that Morphe has been claiming non-vegan products are vegan.

Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Divine Neutrals Eyeshadow Palette Review

I always take photos and swatches before I try the product on my face or eyes, so swatches are always my first indication of how a palette performs. Mind you, swatches don’t say everything! Not all palettes that swatch great perform well on the eyes and the other way around. However, I feel like it is a good first impression and indicator of what you can expect from a palette.

Swatching the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Divine Neutrals Palette was everything except easy. The swatches in my pictures above don’t look that bad, but it took me layers and layers to build up the pigment and make it appear. The shimmery shades were easier to swatch than the mattes because the mattes had barely any pigment, but the shimmery shades weren’t performing much better either.

I don’t even want to call them shimmery shades because they lack shimmers, lol. I would say that they’re more of a satin finish, but to achieve that, it’ll take 40 layers and a lot of setting spray/wet brushes before they show up a bit on the eyes. In the swatches above, I didn’t use a wet brush, just my finger.

On top of that, the mattes are kinda patchy. They swatched patchily, and they applied patchily. It’s probably because you need a ton of it to make it appear on the lids, so they end up being a blotchy, hard-to-blend mess. After wearing the shadows for a while, they started to crease and fade, which I had never experienced before with any other shadows.

From afar, the eye look I created didn’t look that bad, and the tones of the shadows are, in fact, really pretty. However, looking up close, it was just a big mess with underperforming shadows. This palette could’ve been so much more, so much better, and such an essential staple in every beauty lover’s collection, but instead, it’s probably going right to my trash can.

Alternatives

  • Patrick Ta Major Dimension Eyeshadow Palette: One of the market’s most stunning, neutral-toned palettes because of its buttery smooth shadows and excellent pigment. However, it is quite a bit more expensive than the Divine Neutral Palette.
  • Urban Decay Naked Reloaded Eyeshadow Palette: This palette’s formula is similar to the Divine Neutrals palette because it’s a little harder to work with. But it’s more pigmented than the Divine Neutrals palette and would make a great alternative.
  • Too Faced Born This Way The Natural Nudes Eyeshadow Palette: This color story is probably similar to the Divine Neutrals palette but offers more pigment and straightforward application.
  • Natasha Denona Bronze Palette: One of my personal favorites is this Natasha Denona palette, also with a very pretty neutral/bronzey toned eyeshadow palette with the easiest to work with shadows, shimmery metallics, and no fallout at all. Like the Patrick Ta Palette, this one is more expensive, too.

Final Verdict

As the first two Jaclyn Hill palettes were a huge hit, I expected more from this one. Sadly the pigmentation is lacking, some shades apply patchily, are hard to blend, and the metallics aren’t metallics. I’m very disappointed because this palette looked like my dream palette! Sadly, I don’t think I’ll get much use out of this.
