I personally have a very sensitive scalp. This means that I can’t use every shampoo or conditioner on the market. If I do use a shampoo that irritates my scalp, I will get super itchy, red scalp, and even little wounds/crusts from itching. It’s a true struggle! Do you recognize yourself in this? Don’t look any further because I’ll be sharing the exact products that work for my sensitive scalp!
what is a sensitive scalp?
Let’s start by explaining the symptoms of a sensitive scalp. Symptoms of a sensitive scalp can include burning, tingling, pain, itching, and redness. Your scalp may also just feel tight and itchy.
The symptoms may be caused by a bad diet or by using the wrong shampoo. Moreover, exposure to certain climatic conditions, pollution, stress, hormonal changes, and food allergies can cause you to experience sensitivity in the scalp area as well.
Even though the symptoms could be caused by several factors, shampoo is the number one reason for many people. The harsh cleansers or surfactants in many shampoos can wash away the scalp’s acid mantle – the natural acidity that protects your skin – leaving it susceptible to dryness and irritation (Source: Eucerin).
7 Products For A Sensitive Scalp
I’m mentioning Briogeo products because I personally really like the products of this brand and they have a special line for people with a sensitive scalp which I think is amazing. Just so you know, this is not a sponsored post and I just generally love Briogeo products. However, more brands have products for a sensitive scalp such as Drunk Elephant, Andrelon, Kerastase, Bumble and Bumble, etc. Make sure to check the ingredients list as well as the description (does it say it’s for sensitive scalp?).
Not going to lie, I had to get used to this one! The smell is pretty strong and I felt like I was putting toothpaste in my hair lol. However, I noticed my skin didn’t feel irritated and itchy after I used this shampoo, which doesn’t happen a lot. My hair and scalp felt clean and I had a happy scalp afterward, so I recommend trying this!
It’s a gentle, hypoallergenic, dermatologist-approved conditioner with nourishing and soothing ingredients without fragrance or essential oils. I personally prefer hair products without fragrance because it could be a reason why my scalp is sensitive and I also like that this is hypoallergenic. My scalp can deal with this product!
This product works wonders! It’s a soothing treatment that balances hydration, removes surface impurities, and provides relief to an itchy, irritated, flaky scalp. Once used, I can feel my scalp getting less itchy or irritated! I would recommend trying this treatment if you’re looking for a product to relieve the itchiness.
A dermatologist-approved, fragrance- and essential-oil-free leave-in detangler formulated with aloe vera and oat extract to leave hair shiny. Perfect to detangle your hair without irritating your scalp! I personally really love this one as it helped to detangle my hair very well and I had no itchiness after using it.
A charcoal-infused dry shampoo that detoxifies, refreshes, and balances for optimal scalp and hair health—plus it comes in nature-friendly, aerosol-free packaging. This is perfect for people with sensitive scalp but who don’t want to wash their hair every day and use dry shampoo.
This skin and scalp oil soothes a dry, itchy scalp, combats breakouts, and visibly calms irritation and inflammation. This product works for your skin as well as your scalp so it’s multi-purpose and very nice to calm your irritated scalp.
Not only shampoo or conditioner can irritate, but the same also goes for a mask. Since we all want to treat our hair in a good way, it’s nice to use a mask now and then. this mask is literally perfect for people with sensitive skin! It’s hydrating and has a cooling effect so it instantly calms, hydrates, and treats your sensitive scalp.
I personally also love the Andrélon Scalp & Shine Shampoo, this has been a favorite shampoo of mine since forever. I think this brand is Dutch and isn’t available in the US, though, but I still had to mention it.
If changing your hair products doesn’t help you may have another scalp condition. See your doctor or your dermatologist if you’re concerned, your symptoms are severe, or your scalp becomes inflamed or sore.
