Tuesdays Tips: how to self tan

My friend came up with this good idea: writing a blog post about self-tanning. In this blog post, I’ll give you my tips on how to use self-tan products.

I really want to start off by explaining that self-tanning isn’t a must. If you don’t mind being pale, that’s totally fine. I’m writing this blog post for the people who like to look more tan during the summer (or year). For example, I have a light skin tone and I don’t mind being pale during the winter but I love a little more bronze look during the summer. We don’t always have amazing weather in the Netherlands so self-tanning is a really good solution to still get a tan look. I’ll give you my tips on how to self-tan and still look natural. Let’s get started!

  • Waxing or shaving

If you want to wax or shave the areas you’re going to self-tan, make sure you do this 24 hours before your tan.

  • Exfoliate

Make sure you exfoliate before applying the self-tan to avoid an uneven result. Using an exfoliating product also will help remove dead skin cells. Spend a little more time exfoliating where your skin is thickest — elbows, knees and ankles.

  •  Moisturize 

It’s good to moisturize the evening before you’re going to self-tan. The most common cause of a patchy tan is dry skin, so it’s crucial to moisturize problem areas (wrists and hands, elbows, knees, ankles, and feet) immediately prior to self-tan application.

  • Use gloves

To get a more even result, try using latex gloves.

  • Applying

When you’re applying your tan, make sure you’re covered all over. Don’t worry if you go over the same area twice – the tan will only be patchy if you miss a bit, not if you double up. Make sure you don’t rub in your gradual or self-tan. Gentle smoothing is all you need, then you can let the product do its work. Rubbing may make the finish uneven.
With clean hands/latex gloves smooth on self-tanner in circular motions approximately one teaspoon at a time. Start at your ankles and work your way up to your shoulders to prevent any weird marks when you bend over, and save your arms and hands for last.

  • Face 

Go easy on your face! Dab a little amount of product where you’d naturally tan (your forehead, the apples of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, and your chin) and blend outward with your fingertips. Be extra careful around the nose and above the top lip—these areas pick up more color because they tend to be drier. Using what’s left on your fingers, feather the tanner out into your hairline and past the jawbone. Wash your hands immediately after you finish.

  • Reapplying 

For a deeper tan, you should re-apply on successive days – 2 – 3 days in a row will give you a really deep, rich bronze tan.
