Urban Decay Wild West Palette
I think this palette is sound; the only thing I have with this palette and the Naked range, in general, is that the Urban Decay eyeshadow formula isn’t my absolute favorite formula. As I said, it’s good, but I own palettes that I love more.

Cons
  • Some shades were a bit patchy
  • Quite dry and powdery shadows
  • The palette could’ve included more greens and blues

Urban Decay has been creating different Naked palettes for decades now. Still, we got a new one added to the family: the Urban Decay Wild West Eyeshadow Palette, which is inspired by California deserts, Joshua trees, and endless skies.

This palette was a must-have for a neutral lover with a recent obsession with greens. Today we’ll find out if this palette is a ‘yeehaw!’ or a ‘yee…no!’ so keep reading for the details.

Yeah, that’s a pretty bad joke, isn’t it? But we all knew I had to include a yeehaw somewhere in this post, right?! Now that we got the bad joke out of the way, we can peacefully start with the review.

To start with the fact that this is the first vegan Naked eyeshadow palette (correct me if I’m wrong, though), that’s exciting! I own almost all Naked palettes so let’s see if the Urban Decay Wild West Palette’s formula is the same, better, or worse than the normal Urban Decay Naked Palette range.

What Is The Urban Decay Wild West Eyeshadow Palette

The Urban Decay Wild West Palette contains 12 desert-inspired neutrals and retails for $49, ranging from pale peach, warm brown, and metallic bronze to deep blue-green and soft turquoise shimmer. Urban Decay says the following:

The super-pigmented, velvety Naked Eyeshadow family has a new vegan lineup of soft beige, rich terracotta brown, deep copper, and burnt orange, plus a pop of turquoise green and blue. Naked Wild West’s shades are inspired by California deserts, Joshua trees, and endless skies. Blaze your own trail with creamy mattes, metallics, and shimmers in the iconic ultra-blendable Naked shadow formula. Use these ultra-blendable, versatile shadows solo or layer to create endless looks ranging from mild to wild.

How To Use

  • Use the first six warm, neutral shades (left to right) as all-over base colors and transition shades. They look great on their own for monochromatic looks, especially during the day.
  • The six darker cool shades on the right of the palette are ideal for creating depth and dimension in medium to bold looks. They’re perfect for midday to nighttime looks.
  • Highlight the eye with the metallic and shimmer shades—Bud and Tex are great for adding a pop of color and contrast with turquoise and green.

Things To Note

As I already said, this palette is 100% vegan and cruelty-free (Urban Decay as a brand is cruelty-free). The palette is not considered “clean” as it contains ingredients like Talc and Phenoxyethanol. Ingredients like this can irritate the skin but aren’t good for the environment. Just a heads-up if you’re considering leaning more into the clean/less toxic beauty world.

Where To Buy

The Urban Decay Wild West Eyeshadow Palette is available at their own website urbandecay.com, Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom, and Cult Beauty.

Urban Decay Wild West Eyeshadow Palette Swatches & Review

As a neutral lover, this Urban Decay Wild West palette is a dream shade-wise because it has all the neutrals I love AND some pops of color. I truly love the greenish-blue shades Bud and Tex, as they can upgrade any daytime neutral look within seconds. For people that are looking for daytime and a going-out palette in one, this is definitely it!

The shadows, both mattes and metallics, are pigmented by themselves, but if you want even more color payoff, I recommend using an eyeshadow primer (the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is still my holy-grail!) as this takes the colors to the next level. The mattes have a bit of a dry, powdery finish which causes some kickback in the pan and could cause fallout on the face. I recommend tapping off the brush or doing your base after applying the shadows so you can still easily remove the fallout.

The metallics are stunning! I prefer using shadows with a brush, which makes the metallics less popping. This is normal, by the way! If you wet your brush or use your finger, you’ll be able to get a stunning vibrant metallic payoff. I love it!

The shadows in the Urban Decay Wild West Palette are pigmented but buildable, they’re blendable and easy to work with. Laredo and Pony Up required a little bit more work because, at first, they looked a little bit patchy; however, I could blend them eventually. In my opinion, it wasn’t the biggest struggle, so it’s not really a disadvantage.

Naked Formulas Comparison

For your reference, I’ve reviewed the Urban Decay Naked Cherry Eyeshadow Palette and the Naked Honey Eyeshadow Palette on the blog before if you want to read what I said about these two palettes’ formulas before continuing to read this.

Based on how the formula feels, I don’t see/feel a lot of difference. The 100% vegan Urban Decay Wild West palette is just as dry as the other Urban Decay palettes, in my opinion. I also think the palettes are equally powdery. I do think that Wild West is slightly more pigmented and less patchy compared to the other Naked palettes. I feel like the other Naked palettes required a little bit more blend work than this one. Other than that, I haven’t noticed a big difference at all.

Alternatives

  • Urban Decay Naked Reloaded Palette: If you love neutrals and don’t like the greenish shades in this Wild West palette, I’m sure you’ll love the Naked Reloaded palette also by Urban Decay. The formula is basically the exact same, so the only difference is that the Naked Reloaded is 100% a neutral-toned palette.
  • Natasha Denona Bronze Palette: Again, if you love neutrals and don’t like the greenish shades in this Wild West palette and want to try a different brand than Urban Decay, go for the Natasha Denona Bronze Palette, as this is truly one of the best palettes out there.
  • Melt Cosmetics Smoke Sessions Palette: If you want more of the green shades instead of the boring neutrals, check out the Melt Cosmetics Smoke Sessions Palette. This is such a pretty, grungy palette with gorgeous green tones.

Final Verdict

Overall, I think this Urban Decay Wild West palette is sound; the only thing I have with this palette and the Naked range, in general, is that the Urban Decay eyeshadow formula isn’t my absolute favorite formula. As I said, it’s definitely good, but I own palettes that I love more. For example, the Natasha Denona eyeshadow formula is super pigmented, not powdery, and the shades are smooth and almost buttery. The Urban Decay formula is a lot drier, which is probably why I prefer the Natasha Denona shadows.

    1. Ja precies, ik vind het ook een prachtig palette en is echt wel fijn om te gebruiken inderdaad, ondanks de wat drogere kleuren!
