I can imagine that Hyaluronic Acid sounds a little intimidating… Why would you want acid on your face? Isn’t that harmful? What is Hyaluronic Acid exactly? Why do I need it? These were some of the questions I asked myself before I bought and actually started using a Hyaluronic Acid serum. If you have these questions too, then keep on reading because this post will answer them all!
First of all, let’s start off by saying Hyaluronic Acid is safe to use and is for everyone. Yes, you heard that right. Every skin type can use Hyaluronic Acid! Even sensitive and oily skin. Moreover, it’s also very safe to use as a serum and doesn’t strip the skin at all.
What Is Hyaluronic Acid?
‘Hyaluronic Acid (which you might find hiding on the labels of some of your skincare products as HA), is naturally occurring in the human body,’ says Dia Foley of Indeed Labs. ‘The substance works as a magnet for moisture, helping your cells retain as much of it as possible so that your skin feels and appears hydrated, plump, and healthy.’
Just a single gram of hyaluronic acid has the impressive ability to hold up to six liters of water. Add to that, a super-smart ability to regulate that moisture within the cells, so as not to drown them and you’ve got one genius ingredient (Source: ELLE).
Why Should You Use Hyaluronic Acid?
The biggest reason to use Hyaluronic Acid is because of the hydration. See it as a big glass of water for your skin. In combination with this, hyaluronic acid continues to draw moisture in from the surrounding environment.
Hyaluronic Acid isn’t going to replace your elastin but, it can help with the appearance of tightness in the skin. Hyaluronic Acid tightens the overall complexion. Moreover, it’ll also smooth the texture of the skin.
Hyaluronic Acid helps reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles by keeping moisture to the skin, creating a plumping effect. Besides that, Hyaluronic Acid helps reduce and prevent age spots and pigmentation. It does need some help, so make sure to use it in combination with a Vitamin C serum for example.
Every skin type needs hydration, even oily skin. When oily skin is stripped of hydration it overcompensates to hydrate the skin by producing oil. In fact, the reason why you’re having acne-problems could be caused by the lack of hydration. In this case, Hyaluronic Acid could help with clearing up acne.
My Favorite Hyaluronic Acid Serums
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid Serum retails for a very affordable $6.80 and works wonders! It is one of my favorite serums I’ve used, ever. It’s so hydrating and I can tell my skin LOVES it. Truly a recommendation, such an amazing product for so little money!
Timeless Skincare Hyaluronic Acid Serum retails for $9.95 and has to be one of my all-time favorite serums as well. I feel like this serum works the same as the Ordinary serum, it’s only slightly less sticky than the Ordinary one. Also a real recommendation!
Glossier Super Bounce Serum retails for $28 and I’m pretty sure Glossier knows what’s up when it comes to skincare! This brand is definitely top-notch, just like their serum. I absolutely love all of their products, as well as this awesome serum.
The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid Serum retails for $7.99 and is also very affordable, just like the Ordinary one. A lot of people raved about it and that isn’t for nothing. This brand as well as their Hyaluronic serum is worth checking out!
