I can imagine that Hyaluronic Acid sounds a little intimidating… Why would you want acid on your face? Isn’t that harmful? What is Hyaluronic Acid exactly? Why do I need it? These were some of the questions I asked myself before I bought and actually started using a Hyaluronic Acid serum. If you have these questions too, then keep on reading because this post will answer them all!

First of all, let’s start off by saying Hyaluronic Acid is safe to use and is for everyone. Yes, you heard that right. Every skin type can use Hyaluronic Acid! Even sensitive and oily skin. Moreover, it’s also very safe to use as a serum and doesn’t strip the skin at all.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

‘Hyaluronic Acid (which you might find hiding on the labels of some of your skincare products as HA), is naturally occurring in the human body,’ says Dia Foley of Indeed Labs. ‘The substance works as a magnet for moisture, helping your cells retain as much of it as possible so that your skin feels and appears hydrated, plump, and healthy.’

Just a single gram of hyaluronic acid has the impressive ability to hold up to six liters of water. Add to that, a super-smart ability to regulate that moisture within the cells, so as not to drown them and you’ve got one genius ingredient (Source: ELLE).

Why Should You Use Hyaluronic Acid?

The biggest reason to use Hyaluronic Acid is because of the hydration. See it as a big glass of water for your skin. In combination with this, hyaluronic acid continues to draw moisture in from the surrounding environment.

Hyaluronic Acid isn’t going to replace your elastin but, it can help with the appearance of tightness in the skin. Hyaluronic Acid tightens the overall complexion. Moreover, it’ll also smooth the texture of the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid helps reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles by keeping moisture to the skin, creating a plumping effect. Besides that, Hyaluronic Acid helps reduce and prevent age spots and pigmentation. It does need some help, so make sure to use it in combination with a Vitamin C serum for example.

Every skin type needs hydration, even oily skin. When oily skin is stripped of hydration it overcompensates to hydrate the skin by producing oil. In fact, the reason why you’re having acne-problems could be caused by the lack of hydration. In this case, Hyaluronic Acid could help with clearing up acne.

Hyaluronic Acid seems to be in many products right now. All I knew is that it promoted hydration and maybe moisturization. This post has now educated me in a clear and succinct way. I recently used up a vitamin c/hyaluronic acid serum, and now I’m thinking I need more in my routine.

I never heard of Hyaluronic Acid before and started using it after my skin therapist recommended it to me! I’m using the one from The Ordinary and my skin has gotten so much better. 🙂 Definitely recommend that one to others!
